Batch distilled using the sour mash method of adding back some from a former batch, the use of winter wheat and barley malt in the mash along with the corn gives Maker’s Mark a soft, smoothness. Double distilled, first in a copper column still and then a copper pot still, it’s then aged in charred white oak barrels. It has quintessential bourbon notes; pungent, sweet corn like with spiced notes. Nuances of yeast and malt come forth as well. Score: 90 (Margaret Swaine, www.WineAlign.com, Dec 2012)
