Margaret Swaine's Wine Picks

DJ (90): Wine is often so much about the people who make it, and this captivating white is made by Mark Kent, one of the Cape’s brilliant winemakers. He’s responsible for much pricier wines, but pours massive energy into the best-buy Wolftrap duo. The red is also excellent and well-established, but try this surprising white made from viognier, chenin blanc and white grenache grapes that really flourish in the Cape. It’s an ultra dry, sapid food wine with savoury backbone of herbs, botanical extract and chewy South African character. Georgeous white flowers and peachy fruit from the viognier, laser-beam acidity from the chenin, and savoury fatness from the grenache blanc with impressive length that connects to food like with sausage, kale and bean soup or aged cheddar fondue. Tasted October 2013.
