Artezin Zinfandel 2010, Mendocino County
Zinfandel
California, USA
$21.95 (302943)
Lovely authentic zin here. It has a nicely lifted, fragrant nose of classic blackberry fruit with mint, pine and oak cocoa scents. A nice woodsy character but it’s not hillbilly. It’s a full, soft, jammy and rich with classic dark berry fruit powering across the palate. Tannins are fairly soft. It’s from sustainably grown old family vineyards (without specifying which ones). It certainly has that kind of character. Excellent length. Tasted September 2012. Score: 91 (David Lawrason, WineAlign.com, Sep 2012)

In a blind tasting this wine would be easily recognizable as a Zinfandel, from its medium ruby colour, but don’t let that light colour fool you. The nose is very expressive with a rich and fruity mouthfeel and a explosive flavourful finish, classic Zin. This wine is a blend of mostly Zinfandel at 89% with Petite Sirah at 10% an Carignan at 1%, maturation took place in 100% French oak (second and third fill).
This wine opened up with aromas of ripe berries, plum, fresh herbs, black pepper, vanilla and cinnamon notes. On the mouthfeel, medium-full bodied with delicious forward fruit flavours, crisp acidity and silky tannins. This Zin finish is very long, spicy, fruit focused with light tannins and a bit of heat from the 14.9% alcohol. Just a beautiful and well made juicy red here with great purity of fruit and carefully restrained oak, strongly recommended.
I'm not usually a fan of zin, but this wine won me over. It's beautifully balanced, fruit forward, with great length. I didn't even notice the 14.5% alcohol. Excellent with pasta. Tasted October 2012.
Too sweet for my liking
Excellent wine. Beautiful nose, flavour and nice finish with just the right amount of tannins
