Tawse Sketches Of Niagara Riesling 2010, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Riesling
Ontario, Canada
$17.95 (89029)
Huge value here … It is not a profound, nuanced, mineral-driven riesling, but it is intense, juicy, fresh and exceedingly bright. Very fresh acidity balances some sweetness, creaminess and the ripeness of the vintage. Expect yellow plum-pear, grapefruit and vague petrol and spice. It’s so zesty and mouthwatering; with excellent length. Score: 91 (David Lawrason, winealign.com, March 2012)

Great Riesling from one of my favorite Ontario producers. Like Phil Collins having a juice box while doing your morning yard work. This wine smells like apple juice, fresh raked leaves and it will quickly recede in your mouth like his hairline did. I can feel this coming in the air tonight with spicy sweet potato soup… oh Lord, oh Lord.
Aromas of minerals, lemon, and floral. Lovely mineral notes, lemon rind, orange, citrus on the palate. Medium dry. Made in a German-style Riesling. Good acidity that allows it to be paired well with food. Tasted Nov/2011. Score 91 pts
Apricot/peach, petrol with some zesty orange aromas. Nice aroma replays on palate, but with some slight tartness on the finish. Lip-smacking acidity. Tasted Sept/2012. Score: 90 pts
This wine opens up with very lively aromas of pear, green apple, grapefruit and minerals. On the palate this off-dry Riesling is medium body with alcohol coming in at 10% and where the crisp acidity and sweetness are perfectly match. The finish is long with lemon zest and mineral note lingering. A terrific and well balanced refreshing Riesling. I paired this wine chicken curry and roasted cashews, it work beautifully.
How about a top-notch off-dry Riesling… We do this very well in Ontario as Tawse demonstrates with this beautifully balanced example from the 2010 vintage. A fruit forward, clean, and very food friendly style with just a touch of sweetness. Pair it with an Asian dish or with a salad topped with spice rubbed chicken. Tasted Jan 2012.
Off-dry type of Riesling. Decent wine for the price, but nothing extraordinary. Tasted April 2012.
Quite sweet and medium full body - wonderfully fruity, extremely drinkable when chilled. Good with moderately spicy Asian.
Nice Reisling, but nothing memorable.
Very pale in the glass. Tight nose of citrus and a touch of petrol (always my favorite nuance in a riesling).
Just off-dry, VERY crisp citrus and TART green apple flavours. Sour gummy candies comes to mind. Bright acidity and long, sweet and sour finish.
An interesting style that would be a great match for just about any food that could use a squirt of lemon (or sour gummies). I cracked one open for my chicken cordon bleu. A decent match.
Overall, I like it. With the right food it's great. Otherwise, I find it a bit thin and too sharp. For this price I could do better in Germany.
A big fruit profile on the nose with some tropical banana and coconut balanced out by a little tree fruit and some pleasant acidity. A warm, caramel note finishes things off nicely. A lovely wine for sipping all on its own.
A delicious riesling at a great pricepoint. Red apple, peach, mango and minerality for structure. Medium-dry and medium body with a tart acidity. Great balance and excellent length. Nov 2012
very nice
Enjoyable. Green apple finish. Well priced. Tasted March 2013.
Another excellent Niagara riesling at a reasonable price. This one shows the ripeness of the 2010 vintage with lemon and grapefruit as the dominant notes. Off dry with wonderful minerality and acidity that produce mouth watering juiciness. Smack, smack (that's the sound of my mouth BTW). Grip it n' sip it! April 2013.
