Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2008, Coonawarra, South Australia, 53rd Vintage
Cabernet Sauvignon
South Australia, Australia
$24.95 (84996)
Clean, classic, fresh and well-balanced example here again from the every-reliable Coonawarra estate of Wynns, with well-proportioned cassis and blackberry fruit layered over integrated oak spice. The palate is mid-weight, firm but ripe, with juicy acid and light but firm tannins. Excellent length, too. Nice wine here. Score: 91 (John Szabo, MS, www.WineAlign.com, Aug 2011)

Out of 5 stars, I rated this wine: 4.5+
The 2008 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is a medium bodied, fruity to integrated wine. It has intense aromas of black currant, oak, coconut, vanilla and smoke on the nose and black currant and vanilla on the palate. It has a sharp acidity, refined tannins (decant for 30 min) and a long overoaked finish. Ready to drink now or can be cellared standing up (screw cap) for another 5-10 years. Drink-how: it is quite overpowering for most foods, good as a sipper - especially at parties as it has a mass appeal. My impression: NICE, 90-91 pts - though overoaked, for this level of complexity it's reasonably priced. Tasted Aug/12.

This is another full bodied, robust wine from Wynns, with aromas of black cherry, black currant, toasty, minty, earthy, espresso roast with strong tobacco notes. On the mouthfeel, full bodied, dry, layered by dark fruit, mint and wood spices, balanced acidity and firm tannins. Good weight and length on the finish with concentrated flavours and mild tannins lingering. I opened a bottle of this wine about a year ago and found the tannins to be very aggressive, but a year later, I found this Cabernet Sauvignon drinking very well. For fans of a robust and masculine style of Cabernet Sauvignon, you will not be disappointed. This wine is a great value that is drinking like a much more expensive wine, strongly recommended. Very well put together wine. It's drinking very young at the moment. A wine like this needs a good ten years to develop to its full potential. It's an incredible wine for 25 bucks. Flavour, structure, balance, finish...its all there. Give it a go for sure!
