2011 Lighthall Vineyards Pinot Noir “Le retour de Patrick”. At first the nose was all cherry and red fruit, but as it warmed, the second glass gave way to secondary notes of vanilla, smoke, and sweet spice. The wine is fully integrated and there’s a great interplay of the fruit, acidity, and lovely refined tannins. The palate starts with a red cherry burst, drips in some cranberry-rhubarb acidity, and then finishes with smooth tannins riding a Cherry Blossom finish. Drinking really nicely now - will still hold for a few years yet. ****, was only $25 at the time (great QPR). 12.5% ABV.

Fruit appears a bit hidden at first nosing, but after some time in glass opens up. Austere, damp earth, red currants, sage and a hint of bacon.

On the palate, bing cherries with a tart undertone. A bit more oak than many PN, but higher acid holds this together nicely. Tart medium-length finish, most definitely a food wine.

Has enough structure to hold up to lighter grilled dishes, such as chicken and grilled vegetables. Perfect with a mushroom risotto.

Tasted May 2014.

Retasted July 2015: re-rated to 91. An extra year of aging has added depth and balance.
