This has classic, generous Chilean cabernet aromas of blackcurrant, roasemary and coniferous notes, pepper and spice....

The deep intense purple color of this Cabernet Sauvignon opens up with aromas of black fruit, cassis, dried figs, cigar box and crack black pepper. On the mouthfeel, full bodied, black fruit, smoky and toasty oak flavours, low acidity and dusty tannins. Medium-long finish with oak characteristic and puckering, woody tannins lingering. I wish there would have been less oak and more acidity, on the palate, this Cabernet feels a bit heavy and somewhat clumsy. This wine was better on the second night, which meant decanting would be a good idea or to cellar, mid-term 1-2 years.

Description: Deep dark ruby in colour with a medium to medium+ intensity on the nose.

Positives: What a delightful complex nose showing cedar, cassis, star anise, cloves, blackberry, dark chocolate, cigar box, leather & pencil shavings. The taste is just as complex with its notes coming in waves. Similar notes to the nose but a fair amount of spinach on mid palate & finish that is traditionally found in Chilean Cabs. Medium to full body with medium+ tannins & acidity, alcohol well integrated & a very long finish.

Negatives: Taste falls well below the aromas due to the dominate green notes.

Drink now by decanting an hour before service. This Cab should cellar well for another 5 years. Pair it with medium-rare steak.

Tasted: 27 Feb 12

Score: 8.5+/10, Value: 8.5/10, Total: 17.5/20

Out of 5 stars, I rated this wine: 3.5

It's a basic cab sauv loaded with fruit, but the tannins are aggressive and overpowering. My tasting notes actually say "should have been so much better." But it's certainly a nice wine, just not as good as you would expect from a Gran Reserva from the Maipo Valley.
