Poderi Colla Barolo Dardi Le Rose Bussia 2004, Docg Bottle
Poderi Colla Barolo Dardi Le Rose Bussia 2004, Docg
Piedmont, Italy
$51.95

Traditional Barolo (read no over- oaking. over-ripening) here from Poderi Colla. At nearly 15 years of age, the flavours have mellowed into the dried fruit spectrum and, as one would have expected, tannin softened. Long, complex and so damn delicious, this wine reminds me that Nebbiolo is perhaps my favourite grape variety when done right (and it is done right here). Super wine here. Tasted May 2019.

Rocche Costamagna Barolo Rocche Dell’annunziata 2013, Docg Bottle
Rocche Costamagna Barolo Rocche Dell’annunziata 2013, Docg
Piedmont, Italy
$44.75

No formal notes, though I must admit that this Barolo slightly underwhelmed. Upon pouring, there was a bit of effervescence. The wine was merely good, but I suspect that this was a less than pristine bottle. Tasted Nov 2022.

Tawse Sketches Rosé 2020, Niagara Peninsula Bottle
Tawse Sketches Rosé 2020, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada
$18.95

Apparently a blend of pinot noir, cab franc and gamay. I certainly picked up a bit of herbeceous character from the cab franc and even a bit of beetroot from the pinot. Good complexity and not too austere (6g/L of RS - seems spot-on). A really well made rose, well-priced and a lovely summer sipper. Tasted Aug 2022.

Ken Forrester Old Vine Reserve Chenin Blanc 2019, Wo Stellenbosch Bottle
Ken Forrester Old Vine Reserve Chenin Blanc 2019, Wo Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch, South Africa
$17.95

At once, both ripe yet brisk and refreshing. Complex, long finish, I understand that this seems some wood ageing but nearly indiscernible. As always, a real bargain for us wine lovers but I cannot help but feel for the producer that this does not sell for $25+. South African wines are so often just stupidly undervalued. Lovely to drink now, but I should think that this holds for a few years, perhaps more. Tasted May 2022.

Bachelder Wismer Foxcroft Gamay Noir Niagara Cru 52 Whole Cluster 2018, Twenty Mile Bench Bottle
Bachelder Wismer Foxcroft Gamay Noir Niagara Cru 52 Whole Cluster 2018, Twenty Mile Bench
Ontario, Canada
$27.00

An interesting note of pepper runs through this Gamay, enhancing the bright red fruit (cherry, cranberry). Light-medium bodied, fine grained tannin and crisp acidity, and even a hint of light herbs. Certainly the best Gamay I have had from Niagara. Should keep for a few more years, but I'd suggest drinking sooner rather than later to capture the fresh fruit. Tasted July 2021.

Tenute Silvio Nardi Brunello Di Montalcino 2015, Docg Bottle
Tenute Silvio Nardi Brunello Di Montalcino 2015, Docg
Tuscany, Italy
$46.95

Seems a bit backward compared to the '13 at roughly the same relative age. Plenty of red fruit crisp acidity and still noted tannin. Wood is but a supporting role here but the fruit is perfectly ripened. Still, I think I opened this 18-24 months too early. Wait until end of 2024 where it should really open up nicely. I think that this keeps until at least age 15. Lots of potential here. Tasted Jun2 2023.

Emiliana Coyam 2019, Los Robles Estate, Colchagua Valley Bottle
Emiliana Coyam 2019, Los Robles Estate, Colchagua Valley
Colchagua Valley, Chile
$29.95

Cant add much to the reviews already posted here. This is a very fine, flavourful red from Chile, with lovely balance....the fruit, oak, tannin, acidity all spot on. Picked this up at $26.95 ($3 off at the time, which was just a few months ago). However, yet another wine at the LCBO has seen a significant price increase....this is up $5. An excellent wine, Taste Mar 2023.

Thirty Bench Small Lot Riesling Wild Cask 2017, Beamsville Bench Bottle
Thirty Bench Small Lot Riesling Wild Cask 2017, Beamsville Bench
Ontario, Canada
$29.75

A fine RIesling from Thirty Bench, A little off-dry but not at all cloying. Acidity seems a but lower than expected for Riesling, perhaps as a result of the freak-ish warm weather in Sept/Oct. Complexity is very good yet short of outstanding to my palate. Value is merely fair. This seems to be at peak enjoyment, unless you want more of those petrol characteristics - then wait a couple more years. Tasted Dec 2021.
