Château Fardel Laurens Cuvée Ardoise 2012, Ac Faugères
Languedoc, France$13.25
Nicely made, unencumbered by wood, just pure, southern French fruit. Not a big wine, this is more medium bodied with no excess fat. Lean and crisp, but no less good for it. Tasted Oct 2016.
Pierre Luc Bouchaud Muscadet Sèvre Et Maine 2013, Ac, Sur Lie
Loire, France$15.95
Light-bodied, crisp and fresh. Slightly lean citrus fruit, dry, with a minerally after-tasted. Nothing complex, but a most appealing summer wine. Nicely done and a good value. Tasted July 2014.
Château Godard Bellevue 2011, Ac Côtes De Bordeaux Francs
Bordeaux, France$19.50
A lighter-bodied right bank Bordeaux, in keeping with the vintage and appellation. Red fruit (cranberry comes to mind), along with some herbal/vegetal notes (from the cab franc perhaps). Simple, fresh acidity, well-enough made. Decent value. No point ageing. Tasted March 2016.
Boutari Naoussa Xinomavro 2013, Naoussa
Naoussa, Greece$11.75
As always, this is an outstanding value. Good backbone of acidity and tannin, with delicious dried cherry/tart red fruit. I tend to prefer the freshness of this over the more mature 09 that I had earlier this year. Certainly should keep a few years, but really nice now. $14 on release, now reduce to under $12. A steal. Tasted June 2016.
Domaine Houchart Red 2013, Ac Côtes De Provence
Languedoc, France$13.25
I found this to be lean and somewhat lacking in fruit. Simple, forgettable. A bit disappointing. An off-bottle? Tasted Feb 2016.
Rocca Della Macìe Vernaiolo Chianti 2011, Tuscany
Tuscany, Italy$12.95
The 2012 vintage. A simple, fresh chianti. Relatively light-bodied, with typical red cherry fruit and noteable acidity - just as one would expect from a basic chianti. A very good match to pasta and meat sauce or pizza. Not a bad value, but I do wish that the LCBO would price this in the $10-12 range as was intended. Drink now. Tasted Nov 2013.
Cono Sur Bicicleta Chardonnay 2015
Central Valley, Chile$11.65
A nice, easy going fresh chardonnay, without pretension. Clean, crisp and ripe -alot of flavour for the money. Super value. Happy to drink this any warm summer evening. Tasted June 2016.
Campo Viejo Reserva 2010, Rioja
Spain$18.45
A solid Rioja here. Fresh red berry fruits, with noted smokey and spicy flavours from the oak. While the oak makes its presence felt, it is in good balance with the fruit so it doesn't taste like you are licking the floor of a sawmill. Fine depth and complexity. Fairly priced at $17.95, but on sale right now for $15.95, making this a fine value indeed. For Rioja fans, worth picking up a few bottles at the discounted price for sure Tasted April 2016.
Tiago Cabaço Premium White 2014, Vinho Regional Alentejano
Alentejo, Portugal$12.75
A very pleasant white here from Alentejano. Floral and citrus on the nose, leading to fresh flavours of lemons and peaches. Has a slightly creamy texture but with crisp acidity as well. Another super summer sipper from Portugal , and under $13, you couldn't ask for more. Tasted June 2016.
Stefano Farina Solers Le Bocce 2011, Igt Toscana
Tuscany, Italy$13.75
A supple, easy IGT red. Soft, approachable, simple. Red cherry fruit, hint of vanilla. Lacks the vibrancy of many superior Sangiovese-based reds but this represents decent enough value on sale at under $14. Tasted Aug 2016.
