Sherry, and fortified wines in general, are under-appreciated and often provide very good value for money. Manzanilla is a bone dry, delicate sherry that is the polar opposite of what your grandma probably sipped. Light bodied with layers of flavours and complexity, this should be treated like a wine and served chilled. The wonderful briny, tangy and nutty flavours beckon for nuts and olives before the meal but will also complement a first course of seafood, Serrano ham or spicy chorizo. Drink now. Pale lemon in colour, developing nose of dried orange peel, browning apple, pine nuts, olives and a hint of brine. Well balanced acidity and alcohol. The finish lingers with a pleasing almond, green olive and umami note. Mar 2011.
