The 'three star' 2005 Niedermenninger Herrenberg Riesling Auslese*** feinherb, harvested from enormously ripe yet - insists Molitor - healthy grapes, lay on its fine lees in cask until the week before I tasted it. Intense aromas of high-toned cherry and herbal distillates lead into a take-no-prisoners palate impression of enormous grip, tactile density, and a sizzle of lemon rind with pungent herbs and wet slate. The finish is gripping and intense. Don't expect charm from this leesy-rich yet minerally adamant wine, but certainly look for additional complexity with a few year's bottle age. Score - 90-92.
