The 2006 Minervois La Liviniere - consisting of Syrah with small amounts of Grenache and Carignan, and vinified in a combination of tank and new barriques - is scented with cassis, black raspberry, black olives, charred meat, and medicinal tincture of iodine. Mouth-filling and practically velvety in texture, with hints of oiliness of texture and smoke that enhance its medicinal and meaty aspects, this finishes with impressive length, the pungency of black pepper and bitterness of iodine satisfyingly integrated into the wine's rich fruit, and with neither its alcohol nor its new wood at all obvious.
