A grape grower since 1952, John Marynissen not only founded one of Ontario’s first small family wineries in 1990, he was also the first to plant Cabernet Sauvignon, a later-ripening red grape assumed to be incompatible with Niagara’s climate. His daughter Sandra has inherited his legacy of big Cabernet-based reds that remain at the heart of today’s portfolio. In the warm, dry 2007 vintage, several reds took Intervin awards, including more recently planted Syrah and Malbec; an All-Canada Gold for the 2007 unoaked Chardonnay proved that the portfolio is indeed well rounded. A visit to the winery and tasting room has very much a family feel.
