Exclusive Tutored Tasting with Flat Rock Cellars – An Exploration of the Vineyard through Pinot Noir

WineAlign is pleased to present an Exclusive Tutored Tasting with Flat Rock Cellars – An Exploration of the Vineyard through Pinot Noir

Come explore the fickle and fascinating Pinot Noir grape with Flat Rock Cellars, one of Ontario’s benchmark producers. See and taste why the Niagara Peninsula and the Twenty Mile Bench are capable of producing world-class, premium Pinot Noir. Hosted by WineAlign’s David Lawrason, join Flat Rock Cellars‘ engaging proprietor Ed Madronich and winemaker Jay Johnston who will take you through why Pinot Noir does so well in Niagara, specifically on the bench. Learn about what goes into making a premium Pinot Noir, the geology and the climate of Niagara. Understand how these high-quality wines are produced; from sustainable agricultural practices to a 5-level state-of the-art gravity-flow facility and through a careful winemaking process that allows the nuances of the vineyard to show through.

Flat Rock Cellars

In what promises to be a lively event, join us as we taste through key back vintages and current releases including an exclusive tasting of the limited-edition Block Series. Gain a better understanding of how the terroir of this special place affects the wine and how even small blocks of the vineyard can be so different from one another even if they are just feet apart. Be among the very first to try FRC’s Block Series. Produced in less than 100 case lots, these wines are an exploration of the vineyard. When crafting each unique blend of Pinot Noir it is not just a specific clone that is considered but all elements of the vineyard site – soil, slope and altitude. Judge for yourself how this translates in bottle and have some fun while you are at it!

About Jay Johnston, Winemaker

Jay Johnson

Jay Johnson

It was a glass of Canadian Pinot Noir in 2002 that sparked Jay’s passion for wine. Growing up in Quebec, wine was always a part of family meals so it was natural to leave city life behind in 2003 and head to Niagara for an authentic wine education.

As a ‘second career’ student in the Niagara College Viticulture & Winemaking program, Jay knew that you get out what you put in. So, endless hours of reading, learning, tasting and talking with wine professionals in Niagara helped him pick up jobs in the cellars and vineyards of some of the most respected producers in the region. And always with a taste for freshness, vibrancy and purity of our cool-climate varietals like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and Sparkling.
