Elderton’s flagship … The opaque purple/black 2005 Command Shiraz was aged in French and American oak puncheons (500-liter barrels). It offers up a sexy/kinky bouquet of wood smoke, lavender, leather, game, mineral, black raspberry, and blueberry pie. Voluptuous on the palate, complex, and dense, it demands a decade of cellaring after which it should offer hedonists much pleasure through 2035. Score – 97. A friend of mine calls this 'Poor man's Grange' and he's not too far off the mark. Super-concentrated, rich, thick; it coats your senses with chocolate, ripe currants, and cassis. But it was the mix of raspberry tart and black pepper on the finish that won me over - a fantastic wine! Decant 1-2 hours before serving. (northof9finewine, March 2011)
