Love the way this wine is evolving under screwcap. The nose is fresh and packed full of juicy black cherry jam, red liquorice and earthy, savoury aromas. The attack is juicy, the palate supple with peppery, black cherry jam, blood orange, meat, licorice, tobacco and tar flavours. Fresh, fruity, attractive forward style. Impressive, modern red that respects the tradition of Piemonte and barbera. Solid value here for any level of consumer and a steal at $18. Grilled chicken or mushroom risotto are great matches. Score: 89 (Anthony Gismondi, WineAlign.com, May 2013)

The 2011 Fontanafredda Briccotondo Barbera Piemonte has appealing aromas of lees, cranberry, wood and pine on the nose and cherry and black cherry on the palate. It is a medium bodied, extra-dry, fruity wine; with forward/refreshing acidity, soft tannins (no need for decanting) and a medium finish. This is a food friendly wine; drink now – 2017+ (cork enclosure). My impression: NICE, 87-88 pts. Tasted in Sep/14.
