Rosso di Montalcino is affectionately referred to as “baby Brunello” because it is made using the same techniques, grape varieties, and often the same vineyards as Brunello di Montalcino. The only difference is that grapes consigned to Rosso are usually from younger vines that do not yet have the maturity required for inclusion in the bigger brother. Yet, they still make stupendous cherry-, violet- and licorice-scented wines that exhibit soft tannins and are designed for current consumption. Match it to a goat cheese dish or pasta with red sauce.
