Castillo Labastida has produced several notable values that are listed on the Best Buy chart at the end of this report. Their top-of-the-line entry, the 2001 Reserva Especial Manuel Quintano is produced from 100% Tempranillo from the winery's oldest vines and aged for 3 years in American oak. Purple-colored, it has an expressive bouquet of violets, cedar, pencil lead, blackberry, and licorice. This leads to a full-bodied, layered, structured wine with lots of spicy fruit and enough tannin to support 3-5 years of aging in the cellar.
