An Exclusive Dinner Featuring the Wines of Sonoma-Cutrer – April 26 – Toronto
On Tuesday, April 26th, join us for an exclusive dinner and tutored tasting featuring the wines of California’s Sonoma-Cutrer
Join us for an exclusive tutored tasting and gourmet dinner at Montecito Restaurant with Sonoma-Cutrer’s Winemaking Director, Mick Schroeter. Mick will share his insights on winemaking as he guides you through several of Sonoma-Cutrer’s exceptional wines which will be paired with a delicious dinner.
Sonoma-Cutrer, based in Sonoma County, California, has a long and rich tradition of craftsmanship in winemaking. Now in its fourth decade, the winery continues to build on its foundation of success that combines a unique blending of Old World Burgundian techniques with New World American innovation. The result is uncompromised quality that produces wines like no other. This distinct approach has earned Sonoma-Cutrer a long-standing reputation as the leading super-premium Chardonnay in fine dining establishments and retail accounts alike.
Today, Sonoma-Cutrer is best known for making world-class Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. As the portfolio continues to grow and expand, the winery offers five distinct labels of each varietal.
About the Winemaker:
Michael “Mick” Schroeter’s decorated and storied wine background makes him superbly qualified to serve as only the third head winemaker in the long history of Sonoma-Cutrer. It’s Mick’s expertise and globe-trotting wine background that eventually brought him to Sonoma-Cutrer in the role as Winemaking Director.
Winemaking is often a trade passed down from generation to generation and Mick Schroeter is no exception. Starting out on his own as an enologist at Kaiser Stuhl winery in Australia, Mick wanted to blaze his own trail and had no intentions of following in his father and uncle’s footsteps at the Penfold Winery. Then in 1982, as fate would have it, Penfold bought Kaiser Stuhl and reunited Mick with his family in the business.
Although Mick was already well-versed in winemaking, Penfold allowed him to continue his pursuit of total enlightenment, sponsoring his winemaking education at the famed Roseworthy College, and providing him a scholarship to visit and study Chilean wine country, followed by a 6-month tour around the world with his wife and a stop in California to work the wine harvest.
Mick rose rapidly through the Penfold system and had the privilege to be part of the red winemaking team, and work on Penfold’s legendary Grange Hermitage, the benchmark for Aussie Shiraz. From there, Mick accepted an invitation from Geyser Peak Winery in California to take over as Vice President of Winemaking and for 17 years was in charge of vineyard assessment, harvest scheduling, winemaking direction, budgeting and brand ambassadorship.
It is this long track record of success and illustrious career in Australia and California, along with twice being named “Winemaker of the Year” at the London International Wine & Spirit Competition that gave Mick the encompassing experience to succeed Terry Adams as winemaker at Sonoma-Cutrer. He not only fully understands the huge shoes he stepped into, but is excited and eager to carry on the legacy of success with his own personal touch.
Mick will be joined by WineAlign’s David Lawrason.

About Montecito Restaurant
Montecito Restaurant is a partnership between Toronto-native and Hollywood director Ivan Reitman and Master Chef Jonathan Waxman.
Like its southern California namesake, Montecito combines a casual elegance with effortless sophistication in the heart of Toronto’s Entertainment District. The two-storey dining room, lounge and outdoor Adelaide Street-facing patio is located steps away from film festival headquarters at TIFF Bell Lightbox.
With hands-on culinary leadership from Jonathan and Executive Chef Matt Robertson, Montecito’s menu changes daily, marrying the simplicity of the California cuisine that Jonathan himself pioneered, with ingredients that pay homage to the best of Canada coast-to-coast.
Highlighted throughout is Jonathan’s passion for Canadian produce – with a focus on working directly with local farmers, seasonal Ontario fruits and veg, organic chicken from Mennonite cooperatives, cheeses direct from the nearby dairies, grass-fed beef, maritime provinces shellfish, just to name a few.
Our winemaker events have been consistently and quickly selling out. If you are interested in attending then we advise you to purchase your tickets as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
